Some managers are more inclined to trust than others. According to prevailing leadership theory, whether managers take a participative-democratic approach or a directive “hand down the edicts” approach depends on the assumptions they make about human nature. According to this theory, managers can be categorized as either Theory X managers or Theory Y managers:• Theory X managers assume that workers are lazy, prone to mistakes, and motivated predominantly by money.

• Theory Y managers assume that people are inherently motivated to work for reasons that go beyond financial—for self-fulfillment and because they enjoy satisfying relationships with their co-workers.
